Cleaning up the thebuilderstore.com

Thursday, March 9th, 2006

It’s amazing what happens when you find orphaned pages. I had clean forgot about this page I made for a custom pentagon gable vent I made on TheBuilderStore.com

I was originally adding a landing page for an ad campaign I am running with ContractorTalk.com, and next thing you know, I find this old page. Sweet.

Experiment with NW Custom Creations

Monday, March 6th, 2006

I’ve been looking at my friend’s site at NW Custom Creations. For some reason, certain pages are not getting crawled. These pages include his

At first I thought it was simply that spiders weren’t deep crawling, but then I discovered it was a 302 redirection problem…IE it was being totally ignored. So hopefully I have fixed that.

MSN Search giving away prizes

Wednesday, February 15th, 2006

Remember the long-running e-mail hoax from the early days of the Web, the one that had Bill Gates testing an “e-mail tracing program” and offering to pay recipients big bucks if they passed his test e-mail along to all their friends?

Well, the offer is true, sort of. Microsoft Corp. wants you to use its MSN search engine, and it’s got $1 million worth of prizes up for grabs for those who nibble at the offer.

Myself, I pretty much still use Google, and if that fails, Yahoo, then if that fails, MSN. Old habits are hard to break. Switching to Firefox as my main browser instead of IE was a trying task, I had to break myself of the habit of clicking on the IE icon.

Then again, you can surf all three at once.

Super Size Me Googlebomb

Thursday, February 2nd, 2006

I have been using Digital Point’s the co-op ad network for the past few monthes. I am readily impressed, it has helped exposure to my various websites in many different ways, and has greatly improved some of my search engine positioning.

So when I saw an ad appear on BarFly that simply said “McDonalds” I wondered who in the hell would be using such a generic brand name for an ad.

Maybe it’s time to digress for a moment and explain how Digital Point works. Basically, it creates static text links on member’s sites, and displays them at random across everypage through out the entire network of sites. The number of pages indexed by google factors into how much weight you are given. More weight=more displays= more chances for a search engine spider to find your link. And since search engine really really like anchor text, it makes it look like your site is really really about whatever phrase you are using in your anchor text.
One click told me all I needed to know. It took me to the Super Size Me website. So then I went to google and typed “McDonalds” which pulled up McDonalds corporate site in first place, and Super Size Me in second.
“Aha”, shouted inspector Kyle, “I am on to them. Following that old miserable failure technique.”

Portland Relocation

Wednesday, January 25th, 2006

My good friend Carla Muss Jacobs recently started a real estate blog. I’ve worked with Carla for over a year now, and can verfiably say that she is one kick ass lady who knows the real estate biz.

She stands out amongst the hordes of real estate agents by declaring herself as “an exclusive buyer’s agent“. What this means is she will never represent sellers, only buyer’s of the property.

Additionally, she has been most helpful in helping people who are moving to Portland find homes. It is most certainly a scary proposition to be moving from a far away place, and placing your trust in an agent who you may only meet once or twice through the whole process. Carla has it dialed.

When it comes time for me to purchase some real estate here in Portland, you can guarantee that I’ll be trusting Carla’s expertise.

New Projects I am working on

Wednesday, January 4th, 2006

After a fruitful holiday season, I’m back into to overdrive work mode. I’ve been working on quite a few new little projects, including two for Flying Rhinoceros and I helped a friend do some optimization work for this Portland Condominium website.

The BarFly Directory has essentially been put on hold, I’ve been dealing with preventing comment spam on my BarFly Blog

The BarFly Directory

Tuesday, December 20th, 2005

I created a simple BarFly style directory of all bars across the US. It is far simpler than BarFly, as in it allows users to write reviews, but little else.

It is more an excercise of seeing what will be indexed and what won’t, seeing as there is very little in the way of content currently.

I’m curious what it will do though, so here is the link: BarFly Bar Directory.

I also added a directory of Portland Hotels, so that will probably be useful to people as well. I’m currently updated the search function to use zip codes to find the nearby bars.

AOL Dropping Google and Switching to MSN

Tuesday, December 6th, 2005

AOL Time Warner is dropping Google’s search and advertising services, according to this article

The Journal said that, under negotiations between Time Warner and Microsoft, AOL would drop Google as its main Internet search provider and switch to Microsoft’s MSN service

This will mean a major directional shift for many web publishers. AOL users are typically novice, and while sometimes frustrating (nearly every nonsensical all capslock email I have every recieved had “AOL.com” at the ass end).

While Google has the mature and refined search algorithm, AOL users are money for some people. I’m invisioning hordes of webmasters preparing their sites to rank well in MSN, and shifting from their usual google god tactics.

I’ll be watching this with great interest.

Cashing in off things that suck

Monday, December 5th, 2005

Seems people really like to search for “__________ sucks”. A few weeks ago, I posted an article written by a contributor entitle “Why Hipsters Suck“. I’m curious to see what kind of hipster and anti hipster traffic such an article might bring, and what kind of goods they could be sold on.

Trimming the Fat

Thursday, October 13th, 2005

Launched a blog today about four of us who are trying to lose twenty pounds, which is how overweight I am. Not that I’m fat or anything, mostly just lazy. So this is my new weight loss blog.
